We have a pig farm 4 miles north of Latheron in the wild, windy and beautiful county of Caithness. As far as we know it is the most northerly free range pig farm on the UK mainland. We are on the A9 known locally as the Cassie Mire.
We breed free range pigs. All our pigs are rare breeds; Gloucester Old Spot, Tamworths, Berkshires and Saddlebacks.
Our pigs are born and reared outside. They live in warm cosy arks and root, roam and play naturally. Fed on proprietary pig food that contains all the nutrients they need plus rooting/ grazing the land. The pigs are left to grow naturally without the routine use of antibiotics or growth enhancers.
The welfare of our herd is paramount and where possible stress to the pigs is avoided. They stay together as a litter and go into their own ark and pen when weaned until they reach porker weight (55kg). No pig is ever left alone without pig company as they are very sociable animals. When possible the pigs are trailer trained.
Here at Caithness Pork we produce succulent naturally grown pork from high welfare happy pigs. There is approx. 1-2cm of fat on the meat; enough to give excellent crackling but for free range pork our pigs produce quite lean meat.
LOCALLY GROWN. LOCALLY PRODUCED.
